o = knit (right) stitch
~ = purl (left) stitch
v = crossed stitch (i.e., knit through the back of the loop)
s = knit 2 together
u = purl 2 together
z = knit 2 together ‘crossed’ (i.e., knit 2 together through the back of
the loops), for which you may prefer to substitute ssk or [slip 1, knit 1,
pass slipped stitch over]
x = knit 3 together
w = purl 3 together
m = knit 4 together
R = something on the order of “means flat delimitation, before or after the
edge stitches”–i.e., you would normally add one or more edge stitches to
knit these charts flat.
Some charts give every other row (Zwischenreihen, literally “between
rows”) and some give every row (Jede Reihe mustern, literally “every row to
pattern”). On the “between rows” you may purl wrong side rows for lace or
knit/purl stitches as they face you, guided by the photographs.
